10. William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet

Baz Luhrman’s film is the best on screen adaptation of the iconic Shakespeare play we have to date. It is the only film adaptation to truly capture the essence of the story on film despite taking place in a 1990s fictional California beach town. You get to see a young Leonardo DiCaprio and an eccentric Claire Danes share one of the most passionate on screen kisses of all time. And while we all know how the story ends tragically no list could not have this romantic thriller on it.

9. Dirty Dancing

The 80s were primed with movies about good girls falling in love with bad boys. A discussion could truly be made about the validity of these concepts, but the movies still work. Beautiful, intimate dance choreography will make that wine and that cuddling seem so much more intimate.

6. Sleepless In Seattle

Something for the older crowd, this Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan vehicle is filled with so many sweet, romantic images you almost forget that it’s really a movie about an affair and moving on after your wife dies. It’s heavy subject matter, but it’s dealt with honestly and emotionally. The chemistry between Hanks and Ryan is unprecedented and it will rejuvenate that romance between our audience couples.

5. My Sassy Girl

This Korean romantic drama is one of the most honest portrayals of the hardships of love ever put on film. It isn’t the happiest of movies, but for some reason, it has the power to tell its audience that if they truly love someone, they will do virtually anything for them, selflessly and honestly.

4. Jerry Maguire

“Stop. You had me at hello.” Say what you want about Tom Cruise or Cameron Crowe’s dwindling career, this romantic drama was such a huge hit it was even nominated for best picture. 3. Love and Basketball

Gina Prince-Blythewood’s basketball romance focused on the whole concept of love vs ambition long before La La Land did it. This beautiful urban drama is worth visiting for the first, second, or twentieth time. Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps are wonderful and like Jerry Maguire, the sports element will make the men feel like they’re not really watching a romance.

Here’s another sad, sad movie. But the quirkiness of the couples, the honesty about life, and the memorable lines make this film an absolute must see at any time of year. But at Valentine’s Day, it has that extra special element because no one knows what the future will bring. The important thing is the moment, and the romantic connection that you share now.

1. Before Sunrise

Richard Linklater’s indie drama about two strangers who meet in Vienna and share one perfect evening together is the greatest movie romance of all time. It shows the deep connection between two people sharing about their lives, wondering about their pasts, present, and future. All while trying to figure out whether this is the first time the two of them have truly ever fallen in love.
