Sony PicturesWhile Sony Pictures Classics is happily celebrating that they have acquired the worldwide distribution rights to Don Cheadle’s directorial debut about a few lost days in the life of Miles Davis, aptly titled Miles Ahead, which is due to close out this year’s New York Film Festival, Sony Entertainment has dropped the names and release dates of 16 upcoming films that they will produce in 2016 and 2017.

These films will join a line-up that already includes the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man crossover film (July 28, 2017), The Equalizer 2 (September 29, 2017), and the Dan Brown film adaptation of Inferno (October 14, 2016).

The line-up consists of a mix of new franchise hopefuls, sequels, remakes, and even some new content.  Listed below are the titles and the release dates with some of our own thoughts:

Franchise Hopefuls

The Dark Tower

Release Date: January 13, 2017

Stephen King’s hugely popular fantasy series is finally making its way to the screen, after remaining in development limbo since Ron Howard’s plans to adapt it as a TV series fell through.  It will be written for the screen and directed by Nikolaj Arcel (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, A Royal Affair)

Uncharted

Release Date: June 30, 2017

Sony seems to have high hopes for this video game adaptation, throwing it right in the middle of the 2017 summer season.  Not much more has been announced but Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) is attached to write the screenplay.

Barbie

Release Date: June 2, 2017

Despite the fact that the Mattel doll already has a series of direct to video movies, a live action film is in the works with Diablo Cody (Juno) attached as a writer.

Sequels

Bad Boys 3

Release Date: February 17, 2017

This had already been confirmed by Martin Lawrence that it was happening.  Now we have a confirmed release date.  It seems that Will Smith will be back to join him, but rumour has it that Michael Bay will not be returning.  Joe Carnahan (Narc, The Grey) is in talks to helm the film.

Bad Boys 4

Release Date: July 3, 2019

This, however, was unexpected.  It’s already been 12 years since Bad Boys 2, so it’s amazing that we would get a fourth film so soon.

Underworld 5

Release Date: October 21, 2016

No matter how unpopular this franchise is, it just won’t die.

Resident Evil 6

Release Date: January 27, 2017

IMDB has this listed as Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Paul W.S. Anderson is back in the writer/director chair.

Remakes

The Magnificent Seven

Release Date: September 23, 2016

Now that it has a new release date, the much-hyped Antoine Fuqua directed film will star a ton of big names including Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D’Onofrio.

Jumanji

Release Date: December 25, 2016

It may not be a film warranting a remake, but it’s got the coveted Christmas Day launch.

Ghostbusters

Release Date: July 15, 2016

The buzz is already all over Paul Feig’s all female remake of Ghostbusters, except Sony announced it is moving the release date up, so we all get to see Melissa McCarthy take on Slimer one week earlier.

Originals

Passengers

Release Date: December 21, 2016

A science fiction adventure with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence directed by Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), Sony looks to be supporting this one for Oscar consideration.

Money Monster

Release Date: April 8, 2016

Jodie Foster directed thriller starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Patient Zero

Release Date: September 2, 2016

This would have been a franchise hopeful but apparently it is not based on Jonathan Maberry’s zombie novel of the same name. It’s an original horror film starring Natalie Dormer and Stanley Tucci with zombies … hmm …

Baby Driver

Release Date: March 17, 2017

Edgar Wright’s next project has us excited, especially since it’s a heist comedy and we still want to read his Ant-Man script.

The Lamb

Release Date: December 8, 2017

An animated film based on the Nativity.

The Shallows

Release Date: June 24, 2016

No word as to what this is just yet, but the release date seems promising.
