The final installment of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will take place a long time from now and set up the future of the Marvel cinematic universe. Nova appears to be one of the heroes in that future.
The film will be set after the next two Avengers films, and set the tone for the MCU moving forward. In a recent interview on Facebook live, Gunn commented about the possibility of seeing Richard Rider/Nova on the big screen:
“Yes, definitely. Nova comes up occasionally as someone we might use. One of the things I’m doing with creating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it will take place after the next two Avengers movies, and it will help to set up the next 10-20 years of Marvel movies. It’s going to really expand the cosmic universe. We’re going to be setting up new characters. It will be the last movie of this version of the Guardians of the Galaxy.”
Another 10-20 years of Marvel movies sounds like a lot, and it is. This doesn’t mean it will be difficult though. The current version has been going on for 10 years now, and it will end in another two in 2019. This will make a total of 12 years, so a new universe hitting that same mark is reasonable.
Remember, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will see Adam Warlock introduced after his tease in the Vol. 2 credits. Warlock was one of the holders of the Soul Gem in the comics as well. It’s anyone’s guess where the MCU goes after the Infinity Wars films, and we’ll just have to hurry up and wait.
