Thanks to the good folks at San Diego Comic-con, we got the first trailer for “Ready Player One” the upcoming movie by Steven Spielberg; a little-known director… you’ve probably never heard of him. The trailer opens with what looks like a post apocalyptic, futuristic junkyard. Apparently, this is where our protagonist lives. It’s explained that in this world, humans all take part in an M.M.O.R.P.G, otherwise known as a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, called Oasis to help them escape the lack of the world around them. This idea alone relates to almost every gamer, and guarantees many will go see it.
The rest of the trailer is essentially “gameplay footage” and it looks fantastic. Amazingly, they are doing something few have ever done before by adding characters from various Warner Brothers film and video game properties as either “Avatars” or as the enemies the protagonist will do battle with. It’s basically the same idea Disney played with in Wreck it Ralph, or what Warner Brothers did with The Lego Movie, by including many franchises, but to the extreme. This trailer gives me flashbacks to the television show Reboot, which also took place in a virtual world and had antagonists that were either straight out of our favorite films and television shows; or were legally safe knockoffs. It’s also reminiscent of Scott Pilgrim vs the world, as the enemies bust into not just coins, but loot like weapons and giant eggs (presumably health?).
Below, I’ve listed a few of the characters that either myself or Youtube commenters noticed were in the trailer. Keep in mind, these are screenshots from a pretty wild trailer that I watched on my phone, so not all of them are going to be the best quality.
Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm street films. Interestingly, he has two gloves on, much like he does in Mortal Kombat. Does this mean more(tal kombat) characters are going to be involved?
The Delorean from Back to the future.
The Iron Giant from “The Iron Giant”.
A bike that looks like Kaneda’s from Akira.
Harley Quinn and Deathstroke. Some people are saying it’s Deadpool, but it’s highly unlikely as he’s Marvel character and DC is a known Warner brother property.
Duke Nukem. He’s here to shoot rockets and chew bubble gum, and he’s all out of gum.
Halo weaponry. Hopefully, this means we may see more iconic weapons involved as well.
The A-team van and what looks like Stephen King’s Christine.
I for one, am excited about this incredibly ambitious project. As with anything though, trailers can be deceiving. All we can do now is hope we don’t have another horrible video game movie on our hands.
Here’s a link to the trailer, let us know if there are any easter eggs we missed in the comments below.
