The last time we heard Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” played over a trailer, it was for David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That version may have been a cover, but there’s something about this song that gives every visual such a cool, albeit sinister edginess to it.
And here we have Marvel Studios’ teaser trailer for the upcoming Thor: Ragnorok. Much has been speculated about what this film will be about, how it will translate the comic story to film, and of course if it will include the Hulk. This teaser answers all those questions.
Beginning with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in chains, we hear a voiceover saying “How did I get here?” We then see flashbacks to Thor’s hammer being crushed by Hela (Cate Blanchett), who takes over and destroys Asgaard. Of course certain popular characters like Heimdall (Idris Elba) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) get stylish but quick shots, just to let you know they’re in the movie. The trailer doesn’t stop there though. It introduces a few new characters as well, including Skurge (Karl Urban), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and the Grandmaster, played by none other than the great Jeff Goldblum.
But perhaps the scene everyone will be talking about is in the arena, where Thor, sporting a new hairstyle, is forced to fight the Hulk. While making a quick jab that he and the Hulk are friends, he quickly realizes he will have to defeat Hulk or be crushed. The trailer then ends with a neon title design.
All in all, this trailer was pure fun. It sets up the tone that the Thor series is known for. It also shows that Taika Waititi (What We Do In The Shadows) has brought his unique visual sensibilities to this story. This teaser excels at getting us talking about this film, and it does so with style and a memorable song.
