With back to school in full swing and the busyness that always comes along with it, families everywhere will be looking for some down time. What better way than to curl up on the couch and watch a wonderful family film. So with this in mind I wanted to write a list of my personal top 10 characters in family films. The list is organized by year that the film was released and it encompasses anything from recent films to family classics. I hope you enjoy the list.
- Maria – The Sound of Music
A quintessential role model for women everywhere, Maria is a glowingly positive woman in the face of adversity who is a born leader. She is incredibly intelligent, using her wit and cunning to outsmart Nazis, Captain Von Trapp, and even her children.
- Belle – Beauty and the Beast (1991)
She might be your typical beauty queen but because her passion of reading encourages her to learn as much as possible, she has inspired kids to pick up their own books and read.
- Jessie – Toy Story 2 + 3
Jessie has also become an excellent role model for girls and boys who are fans of the Toy Story franchise. She is a wonderful friend to Woody and Buzz Lightyear, strong, and courageous. She also stands up for girl power! Since most of the cast happens to be male she shows us girls can do anything and are just as capable as boys.
- Timon and Pumbaa – The Lion King
Timon and Pumba have the best chemistry in any Disney film. They represent friendship and loyalty to one another. “Hakuna Matata” was one of the best songs that came from the soundtrack and is still popular today. Your family will enjoy watching this classic over and over again!
- Pocahontas – Pocahontas
Instead of running away with her boyfriend, Pocahontas stays loyal to her family. She successfully ends a war by herself, and encouraged environmental awareness. She is a true hero! And excellent role model kids can learn from.
- Wall-E –Wall-E
Wall-E doesn’t have much to say but somehow he is one of Pixar’s most unique creations. Capable of expressing many emotions, Wall-E is a hero at heart. This might be a family film better suited to teens or adults but kids will fall in love with how cute, adorable, and relatable this little robot actually is.
- Gru – Despicable Me
Just because you’re a villain doesn’t mean you can’t also be a kind and loving family man or best friends with minions. You will root for him and the kids admire him even more.
- Elsa – Frozen
One of the most popular characters of our time, Elsa isn’t your regular princess and she doesn’t need a prince to save her. She can sing and dance, doesn’t ask for help, and does what needs to be done on her own. Elsa has become a strong role model for young girls, even adults as well.
- Baymax – Big Hero 6
Baymax is a good friend to Hiro and they develop a bond. And he’s awesome. Do I need to say more?
- Cinderella – Cinderella (2015)
Cinderella is perhaps one of the most loveable characters of all time. In this live action Disney adaptation, kindness and generosity, two of Ella’s most defining traits, are portrayed as empowering strengths. She shows us to be true to your heart and follow your dreams.
